What are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are enlarged cushions of tissue in the anus and rectum which can become swollen and protrude with chronic constipation or straining at stools. Hemorrhoids may be internal or external. It is a common condition which occurs in both men and women. Pregnancy and constipation are risk factors for hemorrhoidal irritation.

How is the condition treated?
- Keep stools soft with high fiber diet, stool softeners and high fiber diet.
- Minimize time spent attempting defecation
- Hemorrhoidal band ligation. This procedure is done in the office and takes about 5 minutes using a hand-held banding device which uses gentle suction. No preparation is required. It is well-tolerated by patients and is greater than 99% effective.
