Dr. Umashanker was born in India and was raised in New York City. She earned her bachelor’s degree with Honors in Chemistry and Psychology, Cum Laude from Hunter College in New York City. She received her medical degree at SUNY health Science Center at Brooklyn and completed her Internal Medicine residency at UMDNJ: RobertWood Johnson Medical Center in New Jersey.
Dr. Umashanker moved to Vermont to pursue a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Vermont and completed her studies in Liver diseases at the Beth Israel Deacconness, Harvard Medical School. During her training she had spent significant time doing both clinical and basic science research and has published articles in the gastrointestinal literature.
She joined Gastroenterology Center of Connecticut(GCC) in 1998 and is now a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. She also volunteers in the Liver Unit at the West Haven VA. As Director of the Liver Center at GCC, she runs clinical research trials in liver disease and also coordinates the Hepatitis Patient Support Group monthly.
Dr. Umashanker's clinical interests include various gastrointestinal(GI) disorders, including colorectal cancer management, women's health in GI as well as Hepatitis C and other forms of liver diseases.
Dr. Umashanker is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, New Haven County Medical Society and the American Liver Foundation.
She is affiliated with the Hospital of St. Raphael, Milford Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
