Dr. Chang was born in Taipei, Taiwan and then spent 16 years living in the Philippines. He attended the American International
School in Manila before returning to the United States. He earned his B.A. in Chemistry with General Honors at the Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, MD. He was a member of the varsity tennis team as an undergraduate.
Dr. Chang was awarded an NIH-sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program Fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School
in Ann Arbor, MI. Under the mentorship of Professor David C. Dawson, he was given the opportunity to study the regulation of
electrolyte secretion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, an area of research with direct relevance to disorders such as
diarrhea and cystic fibrosis. He received the Smith Kline French Award from the Gastrointestinal Section of the American
Physiological society in 1987 and a Horace H. Rackham Fellowship from the University of Michigan in 1988 for this work. He was also
fortunate to have participated in the research program of the Michigan Gut Peptide Research Center, headed by Dr. Tadataka Yamada, a
world-renown authority in gastroenterology. Dr. Yamada also served as his clinical advisor during his medical school training. In
1990, he graduated with a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology and an M.D. with Distinction in Research. He was the recipient of
the Dean’s Award for Research Excellence at his medical school graduation.
For the next six years, Dr. Chang trained at Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine as an intern and
resident in Internal Medicine and finally as a fellow in Digestive Diseases. During his fellowship, he was awarded 3 fellowship
grants from the NIH, Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust and the Donaghue Medical Research Foundation. He currently holds a Clinical
Instructor appointment with the Yale School of Medicine.
Prior to joining the Gastroenterology Center of CT, he started a new practice in gastroenterology in Cheshire as a member of the
Yale-New Haven Health System-MSO.
In addition to general gastroenterology, Dr. Chang has specific interests in colon cancer, liver disease, inflammatory bowel
disease and diarrheal illness.
He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and the New Haven County Medical Association. His hospital
affiliations include the Hospital of St. Raphael, Midstate Medical Center, Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Yale-New Haven
Hospital and Milford Hospital.
